Check Fraud Scheme

April 15, 2009 - University of Iowa Police are alerting the community about a check-cashing scheme involving fictitious checks written on the account of "State University of Iowa."

These checks have been sent to several individuals across the United States and are often delivered via FedEx and UPS. Frequently these kinds of scams, which often originate overseas, target individuals buying or selling items online. The person sending the check will request by email that the receiver cash the check and send back the "overage."

Anyone who receives one of these checks is advised to destroy it and report the incident online through the Internet Crime Complaint Center at http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
